My name is Steven Hellman, I run Hellman’s Kitchen, YouTube cooking show where I teach the home cook how to save time in the kitchen by showing what I’ve learned as a salty chef cooking for a couple hundred salty sailors. I’ve always had a love for cooking and living a healthy lifestyle, but it wasn’t until I joined the U.S. Coast Guard until I was trained professionally to cook for hundreds of people at a time. 

Some of my favorite sea stories involve pulling off a super creative and tasty meal to serve my crew, while simultaneously manning my emergency billet as a medical first responder….and while the rest of the ship is responding to whatever the current mission is…whether it be responding to a shipboard fire, rescuing a fisherman vessel in rough seas, or performing drug interdiction missions off the coast of Central America. I always had a strong sense of pride pulling off a great meal during these high pace operations, mainly because I knew my crew was going to be super exhausted and stressed…and my bomb meal could be that difference of them losing their mind or not. 

Throughout this cooking series, I’ll highlight some sea stories from my time serving in the military, in order to spread veteran advocacy and teach you what it means to be a veteran.

I guarantee my viewers will learn unique and original recipes that I have created from my years of experience feeding sailors, and running out of ingredients while out at sea, which forced my hand to be creative in the kitchen.
